Chapter 20

As the last of the late arrivals came in, they wouldn’t have known anything bad had happened if the story weren’t constantly being retold. The men mentioned Mabel’s name often, which led equally to glances and fingers pointed in her direction. Everyone was friendly and polite, and the diner seemed back to normal.

She had deflected quite a few marriage proposals tonight, all of them along the lines of “You are a fine woman; marry me.” And she’d gotten lots of laughs with her varying ribald ways of saying no. It was all friendly, as they knew she was taken, even if she had kicked Bill out. Being married to one man was more than enough for her.

Dan was sitting at the counter, using one of her fresh-baked buns to mop up the gravy for his second helping. He hadn’t said much to her yet, as he had clearly enjoyed the meal and was now licking his fingers clean. Mabel topped up his coffee. Though satisfied with the food and the fresh cup, he looked like he had a lot to say—and Mabel had a lot to say to him.

“That was a close call,” he said finally, wiping his hands dry. They could speak in normal voices with all the packed-diner noise. “Those boys are just the start. Larson don’t send Glen just to talk. It means he’s here to punish. That Glen is dangerous. A mean, mean man.”

Mabel’s voice sounded frayed, like her emotions. “I-I didn’t think they would come here.”

Dan blurted out, louder than he intended, “You’re antagonizing him!”

“I’m not. I’m just investigating.”

Dan lifted his hands as if to say, What’s the difference? “I know I’m not going to like this, but what did you do now?”

“I took pictures of his farms.”

Dan squeezed his eyes shut with his fingers. “Oh, jeez. And his boys saw you, right?” He then flicked his hand up like he understood. “That is why Glen’s here.” He clicked his tongue. “I tell ya, you are no longer a civilian with him now. He’s not going to stop.”

Mabel took his plate and wiped the counter clean. She wasn’t going to stop either. But how could she get Dan on board? She glanced around and then leaned in and whispered, “I’m getting some help.”

Dan looked scared of her now. “Oh god, from who?”

Mabel mouthed, “DEA.”

“Are you crazy! That will make him furious!”

Mabel glanced around before she whispered back, “My DEA man is going after Larson.”

Dan looked deeply concerned but took his time to think about it. “Are you certain?”

Mabel nodded. “And I’m going to help him.”

Dan lifted his palm like a warning. “It’s okay to tell me. But my god, Mabel. You’re fighting a wild animal.”

Mabel’s anger piped in. “It’s for the girls, Dan. It pains me just thinking about them.”

Dan glared back, like he was judging her resolve, but then he seemed to relent as he rubbed his face. “You’re committed?” he asked finally. Mabel nodded. “I mean, are you really committed? ’Cause he won’t stop.
